Echo – Navigating God’s Voice
November 9, 2016

Have you ever found yourself in a position where God’s voice feels silent?

Have you ever wondered when God is going to speak?

Now I’m not the best role model when it comes to education. I sadly did not take school very serious. However; I did love science, it always intrigued me. I started to study the word “ECHO” Here’s what I discovered:

An Echo is a sound heard when it is reflected back to its source after striking an object.

Sound comes from the original source, but when it bounces off an object, it’s the reflection of that sound that creates the echo we hear. I found out that an ECHO or series of wave lengths are used to measure multiple things in this world:

Echo Box: for testing instruments and music

Echo Cardiography: ultrasound to study every detail of the heart

Echo Intensity: measure brightness and voltage

Echo Power: measure watts or DBM’s

Echo Pulse: measure radio energy

Echo Sounder: measures the depth of the ocean (Sonar)

Echo Encephalograph: examines the skull and brain (My wife says, I need that all the time)

So there’s many ways in which an ECHO plays a part of our lives:

Science says: “There are times we may not be able to tell the difference between the original sound and the echo if the reflecting object is less than about 30 feet away, because they arrive at nearly the same time.”

How does this parallel to you and me? I wonder why we are confused in trying to hear Gods voice? Maybe the sound of the echo of your problems is louder than the sound of the original source; God’s voice.

Science said when objects are in close range, its hard to hear the original sound. My question to you is what are you letting so close to yourself that’s keeping you from hearing the original source of God’s voice? The object of Worry, Doubt, Depression, Addiction, Jealousy, and Pain can be louder when you let it close to you. Get rid of the Echo!

In 1 Samuel 3 God speaks to Samuel three times to try to get his attention. If go and read the story you will notice that every time Samuel heard God’s voice he was by the Ark of God. Meaning he was near God, he was in church, in His presence. We are born to keep God close because it says in the word that He likes to speak to us “In a still small voice” and he whispers to us when He wants to speak. Try standing 50 feet away from someone and have a whispering conversation. Doesn’t work, you have to get close.

Science Also Says

“At other times, we may hear more than one echo from just one original sound. Such repeats of echoing usually occurs in valleys and canyons where there are many sound-reflecting surfaces.”

Ever felt like your in a valley and all alone? Its in those moments where we get confused the most in distinguishing between God’s voice from the voice of the enemy. The longer you stay in the valley the harder it will be for you to hear the direction God’s trying to send you. The devil understands the power of echoing in our lives and he tries to confuse you by sending you multiple sounds of doubt and worry

“Avoid the Valley and Focus on the mountain”

In 1 Kings 19 Elijah broke relationship and tried to go out on his own and was driven to the point of suicide. But God spoke to him in the valley and sent him on a 40 day wilderness hike to a mountain. There’s a book called The Problem of Pain by C.S. Lewis. He quotes; “God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our consciences, but shouts in our pains. It is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world.”

There is going to be times where you feel that your all alone in the valley. You have to make a big decision in your family, or it is a situation you’ve put your own-self in and feel alone. The ECHO’s of doubt and worry are 100 times stronger. The good news is God will speak to you in the valley when He feels silent, but you wont’ find any details until you get to the mountain. In the mountain Elijah found God because he was near God. He got away from all the echo’s of the valley. The top of the mountain is where sound begins & the voice of God is clear.

My last challenge to you comes with a question first. Have you ever played that whisper game as a kid? You have like 20 people in the room and the first person whispers a phrase into the persons ear next to them and you pass it along, but when it gets to the last person its totally different than what was originally said.

“You got some gum, Lets go to Moe’s” / “You got scum in your Toe’s”

What’s the problem with this game? TOO MANY VOICES!

It trips me out how many people I see put all the problems and situations out on Facebook and social media before even giving God a chance to speak through you about your situation. When they write in ALL CAPS, oh man now you know there serious! It’s amazing how many times we call family and friends to get there thoughts on an issue before we take it to God. I think God hates the whisper game, because by the time you share with him its all screwed up. Its amazing how we let the voices of other people be the echo’s that keep us from hearing God’s voice.

Don’t get me wrong you need people to talk to. I have key people in my life that I share everything with. However sometimes the best thing you can do when need a breakthrough or clear direction on what to do. Get alone and let God’s presence through his word, worship, & prayer be your filter. Get rid of the Echo’s and I’m telling you God will speak!
